A 1982 painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat sold for $110.5 million at Sotheby’s New York on Thursday—establishing a new record high for any U.S. artist at auction.
Tokyo e-commerce king Yusaku Maezawa later confirmed that he had bought the untitled work, a turquoise-blue painting topped by colorful slashes and a menacing black skull.
Basquiat skull painting sells for $110.5 million at Sotheby’s auction, in a record for the Haitian-American painter.

These pieces are mostly bought by Art Galleries that display and have admission charges. Not necessarily a waste or splurge, but an investment into their business. Like a restaurant buying millions of dollars worth of equipment to prepare food.
obviously someone inherited a lot of money-because anyone who has the BRAINS to MAKE that amount isn't stupid enough to pay an amount like that for a kids' painting......although...ego might have a lot to do with the purchase.
