On this date in 1972, the A’s clinch their first A.L. Pennant in Oakland with a 2-1 win in the fifth and final game of the ALCS. John Odom pitches five innings for the win and Vida Blue blanks the Tigers over the final four innings for the save.
Greatest teams ever in Oakland--Campy, Reggie, Rudy, Bando, etc. wearibg white shoes! Three successive World Series! Oh, & Billy Martin, their wild & crazy manager!
This was the beginning of the dynasty, and the most important postseason series of any year in the Oakland franchise history. The suspense, intrigue, and unbridled excitement of this ALCS was spine-tingling, from beginning to end. So many heroes, including Odom, and Vida Blue, who really throttled the Tigers at the end of the day. Billy Martin visited Reggie in the clubhouse after the game, and consoled him because he couldn't play in the World Series.
10-years old and stuck in class in Oakland when this game was played. No TV, no radio, no smartphone to get the score. The nuns could care less. But it was great to watch the news to find out we won. And even greater when the A's took down the Big Red Machine to bring the Bay its first World Championship!
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 team winning the World Series. Share your favorite player from the 1967 team in the comments!
