Here are another two screencaps that represent why it was necessary to have the HDCAM tapes we shot Payne & Redemption on, transferred to a RAW, file-based format, before any further steps could be taken towards finishing and releasing the film.
In the first screencap, we have a frame from the Standard Definition DVD proxies, which were my only source of footage for a whole NINE years. This is why the trailers look like they were cut from footage off some old VHS tape that Fido buried back in the 80s.
In the second screencap, we have the same exact frame, but from the 1080p RAW files that were encoded from the tapes in October, last year. Again -- and I think you'll agree -- the difference in quality between the two is staggering.
As you may notice, there is a lot of horizontal noise in this particular shot, and this is due to having to bump up the exposure by quite a bit to create a more balanced-looking image. However, there are plenty of great noise reduction plugins out there, so hopefully we'll be able to reduce the noise to acceptable levels -- without compromising the integrity of the footage -- when the time rolls around.
Back in 2006, we were using the Arri D-20, which was an awesome camera at the time, but compared with today's offerings, it leaves much to be desired. Namely, light sensitivity, acquisition format, and cost. Nowadays, with cameras like the Sony A7S II, you can capture almost noiseless footage, using only the MOON as your key light, on an affordable SD card, and for 1/40th the cost of Payne & Redemption.
Pretty mind-boggling when you think about it.

In the second screencap, we have that same exact frame, taken directly from the 1080p RAW files that were encoded from the tapes, after I had them transferred to hard-drive at the end of last year. The difference is night and day.
Funny thing is, if we'd shot Payne & Redemption now, it would have been finished already. But back in 2006, HD was still in its infancy, consumer-based large sensor cameras like the 5D Mark III or Sony A7S II didn't exist -- nor did solid-state media -- and we had no choice but to use largely experimental tech, which was not only very expensive to rent and run, but unpredictable and finicky, too.
When you think about it for a moment, it really does put things into perspective.
