He's very calm on the ice, it helps me to do my thing."

While he's adjusted to a new defensive partner, Vatanen is still learning his way around Newark and the rink.

"The equipment guys showed me the way," Vatanen said. "I had no idea where to come here. When I was driving, I think I drove once the wrong way. But it doesn't matter, I found my way here and I was early!"

As practice began to wrap up, Hynes gathered his team at center ice and calmly led a discussion. The takeaway? One game at a time.

"It's about tomorrow night," Hynes said. "It's a good challenge for us. We won the first game, and any time you play a team back to back, usually the game becomes more intense. We talked about process over outcome."

<code data-tlink="https://twitter.com/amandacstein/status/938807383379402752" >Tweet from @amandacstein: #NJDevils lines at practice: pic.twitter.com/VaDf98EhTG</code >
