Yesterday the people of Achill held a Remembrance Service for all those lost and missing at sea over the last 12 months.
The service was held at the Statue of Our Lady, Star of The Sea, Minaun Heights, Achill.
Units from the Irish Coast Guard were joined by their colleagues from Achill Island Lifeboat, An Garda Síochána, local healthcare professionals, fishermen and all sections of the island community.
During the service there were special dedications to Caitríona Lucas, who died whilst on active service in Kilkee, Co. Clare in September 2016. Also remembered were the crew from the Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116, Dara Fitzpatrick, Mark Duffy, Ciaran Smith and Paul Ormsby.
At the conclusion of the service there was a ceremonial fly-past by the Sligo based Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118 official. This was a very moving and powerful gesture of solidarity between the people of Achill and the Search And Rescue (SAR) services that protect our community.
On behalf of Achill Island Coast Guard can I thank both the Parish and People of Achill for a truly memorable and humbling service.
Go Rath Maith Agat.
