A thunderstorm probed with atmospheric muons had an electric potential exceeding one billion volts, much higher than values measured previously.
The electric potential of a thunderstorm has been measured at 1.3 billion volts in a new study. That's an order of magnitude greater than the previous record. The measurement was obtained by analyzing the flux of muons, which are produced when cosmic rays interact with molecules in the atmosphere.
