Harry Connick Jr is 50 today.
He says that one of his main inspirations was the jazz of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Asked in 1989 whether he played pop or jazz, he said: "I’m attempting to play and sing music on a higher level and broadcast it to as many people as I can, the younger people, especially, so they can appreciate it as I do. Because I think it’s the greatest kind of music there is: not only New Orleans music, but Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington or Louis Armstrong, for that matter. Wouldn’t it be great if all the music on the radio today were like that? I mean, I’ve got nothing against rock ‘n’ roll, but rock ‘n’ roll seems to have completely cornered pop music. I want to change all that. If my music becomes popular, then jazz becomes popular. If I’m known, then jazz will become better known. I want people to hear authentic jazz music. I’d like to elevate jazz to a level where more people will hear it."
you were barely 13 when I first saw you at the "Famous Door" across from the Sonesta. Thank you for your Ambassadorship for New Orleans, you are indeed a great advocate for the most incredible city in this country, America's link to a world unknown to most. HB Harry.
Keep promoting the great American Songbook Harry. You're a great musician and representative for this music.
I remember listening to him in a little bar on Ventura Blvd in the San Fernando Valley, before he was famous. Loved him then and still do!
