Van Gogh often worked in series. If he liked a particular subject, he used it to produce several works of art. In Paris, he had painted a large number of still lifes with flowers to practise the use of modern colours and brushwork. During his first spring in Arles, however, Van Gogh redefined the idea of working in series. The theme he chose was orchards in blossom, a subject he also knew from the Japanese prints that were so popular at the time.
